Former Japanese actress Takagi arrested for marijuana possession

Former actress Saya Takagi, who ran unsuccessfully in July’s upper house election, was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of possessing marijuana, the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry said.
In the House of Councillors election, Takagi ran for a Tokyo district seat on the New Renaissance Party ticket. She advocated legalizing the use of marijuana for medical purposes but was defeated.

Dried marijuana was found Tuesday in the home of Takagi, 53, and two male housemates—Shigenari Moriyama, 58, and Yuki Omi, 26—on Ishigaki island, Okinawa Prefecture, according to the ministry’s narcotics control department.

Takagi, whose real name is Ikue Masudo, and Omi, jobless, denied the allegations while Moriyama, who said he is a company executive, admitted to them, according to investigators. The former actress said the drugs did not belong to her, they said.

The department raided their home, Takagi’s car and an inn she runs, and confiscated several dozen grams of dried marijuana as well as a pipe and rolling paper believed to have been used to smoke the drug. Investigators said they found traces of use on the pipe.

A native of Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, Takagi debuted as an actress in 1983.

In 2008, she began using her real name, and in recent years has promoted an environmentally sustainable lifestyle.
