The number of deaths in bicycle accidents fell 14.7% in one year after a revised road traffic law took effect in June 2015 improving safety measures, the National Police Agency said Thursday.
During the year through May, 517 bicycle riders died in accidents, 89 fewer than the level over the same period a year earlier, while the number of accidents involving bicycles decreased 13.1% to 93,484.
An official of the agency attributed the drop to the effect of the revised law, which designates 14 bicycle traffic violations, such as riding while drunk and riding a bicycle without brakes as particularly dangerous.
The amended law requires individuals to receive a three-hour safety lecture if they violate any of the 14 rules, which also include red light and stop sign violations, twice in three years.
A total of 24 people have attended the lecture since the revised law was implemented, according to the agency.
The number of accidents involving bicycles and pedestrians fell 5.4% to 2,417 in the year to May, while those involving bicycles and vehicles dropped 13.3% to 83,860.
