A 13-year-old boy from New York City was said to have drowned while he attempted to rescue his 11-year-old brother, who also died in the Amina River in the Dominican Republic on Monday. He died trying to save his younger brother from drowning.
The area where the boys died is about 120 miles north of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
The boys were with family members Sunday when the younger child began struggling, said Francisco Arias, director of the civil defense agency for the northern region of the country.
There was no lifeguard on duty and both boys were dead by the time authorities arrived at the scene along the river, about 120 miles north of Santo Domingo, Arias said.
