A 36-year-old man who took a woman hostage at a Christian church in Sakura, Chiba Prefecture, was arrested Friday after police officers entered the building in the early morning.
Police arrested the man, identified as Daisuke Kotabe from the city of Sakura, east of Tokyo, for allegedly confining the 51-year-old woman, a counselor at the church, for eight and a half hours from Thursday night.
Kotabe has admitted to confining the woman, who sustained non-life threatening injuries, the police said, but his motive was not yet known.
The suspect visited the church with his parents in their 70s to receive counseling from the woman, according to the police. He took out a baseball bat and a knife from his bag soon after the counseling started and became violent, they said.
His parents and a man from the church escaped but suffered injuries, while the counselor was held hostage, the police said.
A special squad of the Chiba prefectural police entered the church around 5 a.m. after police and church officials spent hours talking to Kotabe.
