Ex-boyfriend of strangled woman arrested over 2013 murder case

The former boyfriend of a 25-year-old woman who was strangled after being given sleeping pills at an apartment in Tokyo’s Shinjuku Ward in June 2013 was arrested Saturday on suspicion of murder.

Police said Kazumaro Sato, 30, denied the murder charge. Yukari Abe disappeared in March 2013, but it was not until December 2014 that she was reported missing by her father. Her body was discovered last June in a cemetery in Sagamihara, Kanagawa Prefecture. The police arrested Sato and his then girlfriend Chisaki Akiyama, 24, the following day and later charged them with abandonment of Abe’s body.
In December, Sato was given a 10-month prison sentence, but suspended for three years. Akiyama is still on trial.
The Metropolitan Police Department also served a further arrest warrant on Akiyama on Saturday on suspicion of complicity in the murder. The police said she told them she was asked by Sato to buy sleeping pills but did not know what he would use them for.
